Can Warm Neutral Medium Survive Inside Molecular Clouds?

چکیده
Recent high resolution numerical simulations have suggested that the interstellar atomic hydrogen clouds have a complex two-phase structure. Since molecular clouds form through the contraction of HI gas, the question arises as to whether this structure is maintained in the molecular phase or not. Here we investigate whether the warm neutral atomic hydrogen (WNM) can exist in molecular clouds. We calculate how far a piece of WNM which is not heated by the UV photons could penetrate into the cloud, and find that in the absence of any heating it is unlikely that large fraction of WNM survives inside high pressure molecular clouds. We then consider two possible heating mechanisms, namely dissipation of turbulent energy and dissipation of MHD waves propagating in the WNM inside the cloud. We find that the second one is sufficient to allow the existence of WNM inside a molecular cloud of size ≃ 1 pc having pressure equal to ≃ 10× PISM. This result suggests the possibility that channels of magnetised WMN may provide efficient energy injection for sustaining internal turbulence which otherwise decays in a crossing time. Exotic clouds in the local interstellar medium
The neutral interstellar medium (ISM) inside the Local Bubble (LB) has been known to have properties typical of the warm neutral medium (WNM). However, several recent neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption experiments show evidence for the existence of at least several cold diffuse clouds inside or at the boundary of the LB, with properties highly unusual relative to the traditional cold neutral medi...
متن کاملTwo-fluid Mhd Simulations of Converging Hi Flows in the Interstellar Medium. Ii: Are Molecular Clouds Generated Directly from Warm Neutral Medium?
Formation of interstellar clouds as a consequence of thermal instability is studied using twodimensional two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We consider the situation of converging, supersonic flows of warm neutral medium in the interstellar medium that generate a shocked slab of thermally unstable gas in which clouds form. We found, as speculated in paper I, that in the shocked slab mag...

We investigate the propagation of a shock wave into a warm neutral medium and cold neutral medium by one-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations with detailed treatment of thermal and chemical processes. Our main result shows that thermal instability inside the shock-compressed layer produces a geometrically thin, dense layer in which a large amount of hydrogen molecules is formed. Linear stabili...
متن کاملHow Long Can Tiny H I Clouds Survive?
We estimate the evaporation timescale for spherical H I clouds consisting of the cold neutral medium surrounded by the warm neutral medium. We focus on clouds smaller than 1pc, which corresponds to tiny H I clouds recently discovered by Braun & Kanekar and Stanimirović & Heiles. By performing one-dimensional spherically symmetric numerical simulations of the two-phase interstellar medium (ISM),...

Aims. We probe the effect of turbulent diffusion on the chemistry at the interface between a cold neutral medium (CNM) cloudlet and the warm neutral medium (WNM). Methods. We perform moving grid, multifluid, 1D, hydrodynamical simulations with chemistry including thermal and chemical diffusion. The diffusion coefficients are enhanced to account for turbulent diffusion. We post-process the stead...
